There are a number of ways to save money on fuel consumption, even with a luxury vehicle. In fact, it is possible to boost the overall fuel-efficiency of any car by as much as 30% simply by following the car’s regularly scheduled vehicle maintenance appointments and by paying attention to your driving style.
Here are some tips to help reduce fuel costs in any type of vehicle.
Purchase the correct grade of gasoline. Note that most cars run just fine on regular grade. Additionally, do not “top off” at the pump. According to the EPA, once the tank is full, the gasoline from the pump will actually be drawn back into the station’s tanks. This means the gas you’ve paid for goes right back into the storage tanks of the gas station. Finally, make sure your gas cap is on tight.
Look around for the best price. Gas prices can vary greatly from block to block.
Change your travel plans
Carpooling can save you big money on a daily basis. Sharing a ride with a friend is another great way for both of you to increase fuel economy.
If your employer offers a telecommuting option, take it! And use the computer or telephone to replace shopping trips.
Driving the speed limit, and avoiding aggressive driving, can reduce fuel costs by up to 25%.
Reduce air conditioner usage
Using the air conditioner can increase fuel costs by up to 21%. Use the car’s flow through ventilation rather than opening the windows or running the air conditioning system.
Eliminate extra weight
A loaded roof rack and a full trunk can greatly increase fuel consumption. Reduce any unnecessary weight.
Avoid idling whenever possible. If the car is going to be stopped for 30 seconds or more, make sure to put it into park and turn off the engine.
Improve vehicle efficiency
By keeping your vehicle’s regular maintenance schedule as prescribed by your owner’s manual, your vehicle will achieve its best fuel economy. Don’t drive with a dirty air filter or under-inflated tires, as these can increase fuel costs by 13%.
Choose a fuel-efficient vehicle
Driving a fuel efficient vehicle can save you as much as 50% on fuel costs. Vehicles to consider include hybrids, like the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid.
